New York City buildings are required to install building evacuation maps and safety signs that comply with the New York City fire code. Several examples of New York city required safety signs are indicated below.
 

Elevator Landing Signs
27-391 SIGNS AT ELEVATOR LANDINGS — EVACUATION MAPS

A sign shall be posted and maintained on every floor at the elevator landing. The sign shall read “IN CASE OF FIRE, USE STAIRS UNLESS OTHERWISE INSTRUCTED”. The sign shall also contain a diagram showing the location where it is posted and the location and letter identification of the stairs on the floor.

The Diagram on such sign may be omitted provided that signs containing such diagram are posted in conspicuous places on the respective floor.

Staircase and Elevator ID Signs
27-393 STAIR AND ELEVATOR IDENTIFICATION SIGNS

Each stair and each bank of elevators shall be identified by an alphabetical letter. A sign indicating the letter of identification for the elevator bank shall be posted and maintained at each elevator landing directly above or as part of the sign specified in section 27-391. The stair identification sign shall be posted and maintained on the occupancy side of the stair door.

Fire Safety Guide
408.9.1.1 FIRE SAFETY GUIDE - APPENDIX 1

The residential fire safety guide shall serve to inform building occupants, building service employees and visitors as to the building’s construction, fire safety systems, means of egress and evacuation and other procedures to be followed in the event of fire in the building.

Fire Safety Notice Signs
408.9.1.2 FIRE SAFETY NOTICES

The fire safety notice shall serve to inform building occupants, building service employees and visitors as to the evacuation and other procedures to be followed in the event of fire in the building. Such notice shall be in such form as prescribed by the commissioner by rule and shall be posted within each dwelling unit and such other locations as set forth in the rules.

Large notice must be posted in common areas (8.5“x11“)

Small notice must be posted inside dwelling on door (5.5“x8.5“)
